ALTERNATE, in Heraldry, is used in respect of the Situation of the Quarters. See QUARTER. Thus, in Quarterly, Ecartele, the first and fourth Quarters are alternate; and are usually of the same Nature. The like holds of the second and third. See QUARTERING, QUARTERLY, etc.
