AUSPICES, in antiquity, a sort of priests or soothsayers, appointed to observe the flight of birds, and thence to form presages of future events. See DIVINATION. The auspices were thus call’d, quasi avispices, ab avibus inspiciendis—They are ordinarily confounded with the augurs, though in strictness there be a difference. See AUGUR.
