ANTOECI, in Geography, those Inhabitants of the Earth who live under the same Meridian, and at the same Distance from the Equator; the one towards the North; and the other to the South. See EARTH. Hence, the Antoeci have the same Longitude and the same Latitude, only of a different Denomination. See LATITUDE. The Inhabitants of Peloponnesus are Antoeci to the Hottentots of the Cape of Good Hope—Antoeci are frequently confounded with Antisci. See ANTISCI. The Antoeci have precisely the same Hours of the Day and Night; but opposite Seasons: when it's 12 o'Clock in the longest Summer Day with one; it's 12 o'Clock of the shortest Winter's Day with the other; and hence the Night of the one is always equal with the Day of the other. See DAY, HOUR, SEASON, etc. Hence also those Stars which never rise to any given Place, to the Antoeci and Antipodes thereof never set: and vice versa—And if the Antoeci turn their Faces toward each other, or the Antipodes look both toward the Equator, the Stars will rise to the one on the right Hand, and to the other on the Left. See ANTIPODES, etc. The Word is formed of the Greek ἀντί, against, and οἶκος, I dwell, inhabit. The Antoeci are distinguished from the Perioeci. See PERIOECI.
