AMPHIPOLIS, in Antiquity, Archons, or chief Magistrates of the City of Syracuse. See ARCHON. They were first established by Timoleon, after his Expulsion of Dionysius the Tyrant. They governed Syracuse for the Space of 300 Years; and Diodorus Siculus assures us, they subsisted even in his Time.
