AMPHISCI, in Geography and Astronomy, inhabitants of the Torrid Zone. See ZONE. They are thus denominated, as having their Shadow turned sometimes one way, and sometimes another, i.e., at one time of the Year to the North, and at another to the South. See SHADOW. The Word comes from ἀμφί (amphi), about, and σκιά (skiá), Shadow. The Amphisci are also Astii. See ASTII.
