ANTA, or Ante, in the ancient Architecture, a square Column, or Pilaster, placed at the Corners of the Walls of their Temples and other Edifices. See PILASTER, TEMPLE, etc. The Antae stood out of the Wall, with a Projection equal to one eighth of their Face, provided there were no Ornament that had a greater Projection; but it was a Rule that the Projection of the Antae should always equal that of the Ornaments.
