AUSTERITY, in a moral sense, signifies severity, or a rigid carriage and deportment in any thing. Thus we say, austerity of manners; the austerities of the monastic life. The austerity of the Roman censors kept the people in their duty. The greatest austerity of the Carthusians is perpetual solitude. See CENSOR, CARTHUSIAN, SOLITARY, etc.
