AUNCEL-WEIGHT, quasi, Handled-Weight, is a kind of Balance, consisting of Scales hanging on Hooks fastened at each End of a Beam or Staff, which a Man lifts up on his Hand or Fore-finger, and so discovers the Equality or Difference between the Weight and the Thing weighed. See BALANCE.
There being great Deceits practiced in these Weights, they were prohibited by several Statutes; and the even Balance alone commanded. See WEIGHT and STANDARD. The Word is still used in some Parts of England, to signify being sold by poising in the Hand, without putting it into the Scales.
