AUGMENT. See AUGMENTATION.
AUGMENT, AUGMENTUM, in the Greek grammar, an increase of the quantity, either of a letter, or a word. See QUANTITY. There are two kinds of augments.—Temporale, or of a letter, when a short vowel is changed into a long one; or a diphthong into another longer one: thus called by reason the time of its pronunciation is now lengthened. Augmentum Syllabicum, or of a syllable, is when a letter or syllable is added at the beginning of the word; so that the number of syllables is enlarged.
AUGMENTS, in Mathematics. See INCREMENTS, FLUXIONS, etc.
