ATTITUDE, in painting and sculpture, the posture of a figure, or statue; or the disposition of its parts, by which we discover the action it is engaged in, and the very sentiment supposed to be in its mind. See FIGURE, STATUE, and ACTION. The representing of these in a strong and lively manner, makes what they call a good Expression. See EXPRESSION. The word comes from the Italian Attitudine, which signifies the same thing.
