ATROPHY, ἀτροφία, an indisposition or disease, wherein the body or some of its parts, do not receive the necessary nutriment, but dwindles or wastes insensibly. See NUTRITION.
Such are what we commonly call consumptions, phthisis, etc. See CONSUMPTION, PHTHISIS, etc.
An atrophy is natural in old age, called atrophia senilis. See AGE, DEATH, etc.
The word is compounded of the privative particle α, and τρέφω, I feed, nourish.
