ATOMICAL PHILOSOPHY, the doctrine of atoms; or a method of accounting for the origin and formation of all things, from the supposition of atoms, endowed with gravity and motion. See ATOM, WORLD, etc.
The atomical philosophy was first broached and taught by Moschus, Leucippus, and Democritus: It was cultivated by Epicurus; whence it became also denominated the Epicurean Philosophy. See EPICUREAN.
It has been since retrieved by Gassendus, and others; and is now espoused and adhered to by a great part of the philosophical world, under the denomination of the corpuscular philosophy. See CORPUSCULAR PHILOSOPHY.
