ARÆOSTYLE, Armostylotos, in ancient architecture, a form of intercolumniation; wherein the columns were placed at the distance of eight, or, as some say, ten modules from one another. See INTERCOLUMNIATION. In the Aræostyle the columns were the widest and most open they were ever planted; whence the name: from the Greek ἀραιός (araios), rare, and στῦλος (stylos), column. The Aræostyle is chiefly used in the Tuscan Order; at the gates of great cities and fortresses.
