ARRHEPHORIA, a Feast among the Athenians, instituted in Honour of Athena.—Boys, or, as some say, Girls, between 7 and 12 Years of Age, were the Ministers that assisted at this Feast. See FEAST.
The Word is derived from the Greek Ἀρρηφορία, which is composed of ἀρρητός, Mystery, and φέρω, I carry.—This Feast was also called Hersephoria, from Herse the Daughter of Cecrops, on whose account it was established.
