ARITHMANCY, Arithmantia, or ARITHMOMANCY;a kind of Divination, or Method of foretelling future Events, by means of Numbers. See DIVINATION and NUMBER.
The Word is compounded of ἀριθμός, Number, and μαντεία, Divination. The Gematria, which makes the first Species of the Jewish Cabbala, is a sort of Arithmancy. See GEMATRIA and CABBALA.
