This office was erected with the 8th Electorate,in favor of the Elector Palatine, who had lost his formerelectorate, which was given to the Duke of Bavaria, by Emperor Ferdinand II, who took it away from FrederickElector Palatine, after the Battle of Prague, where he wasdefeated in maintaining his election to the Crown of Bohemia. The dignity of Arch-Treasurer is contested between theElector of Brunswick, now King of Great Britain, whoclaims it in virtue of his succession to Elector Frederick;and the present Elector Palatine. See PALATINE.
