ARCH-CHAMBERLAIN, Archicamerarius, an officer of the empire; much the same with what in England we call Great Chamberlain. See CHAMBERLAIN.
The Elector of Brandenburg is Arch Chamberlain of the empire, being so appointed by the Golden Bull; and in that quality, he bears the scepter before the emperor, walking on the left hand of the Elector of Saxony. At some solemnities, he serves on horseback like other electors; carrying a basin with a towel in his hands: from which alighting he sets it for the emperor to wash—He has his vicar, or Sub Arch-Chamberlain, who is Prince of Hohenzollern, of the House of Brandenburg. See ELECTOR, EMPIRE, etc.
