APPLAUSE, properly signifies an Approbation of something witnessed by clapping the hands. The Word is formed of the Latin Applausus, or Plausus, from the Verb plaudere, to clap. The ancient way of applauding by clapping the hands, is scarce retained anywhere but in the Colleges and Theatres. Such a Tragedy was acted with great Applause; Such a Student maintained a Thesis with Applause, etc. See ACCLAMATION.
