APOSTOLOCI, called also Apostoni, and Apostites, a Name assumed by two different Sects of Heretics, on account of their pretending to imitate the Manners and Practice of the Apostles. See APOSTLES. The first Apostolics, otherwise called Apostolici and Apostatici, rose out of the Encratites, and Cathari in the 2nd Century. They made profession of abstaining from Marriage, and the use of Wine, Flesh, Money, etc. See ENCRATITE, ENCRATITES, etc.

The other Branch of Apostolics were of the 12th Century: These also condemned Marriage, but allowed of Concubinage; set aside the use of Baptism; and in many things imitated the Manichees. St. Bernard wrote against them.
