APHTHARTODOCITES, Aphtartodocetae, a Sect of Heretics, sworn Enemies of the Council of Chalcedon. They arose among the Byzantines, and made their first appearance in the Year 535. See MONOPHYSITE. The Word is derived from the Greek ἄφθαρτος, incorruptible, and δοκέω, I judge; and was given them because they imagined the Body of Jesus Christ was incorruptible and impassible, and not capable of Death.
