ANTINOMY, Antinomia, a Contradiction between two Laws, or two Articles of the same Law. See LAW. The Word sometimes also signifies an Opposition to all Law; whence a Sect of Enthusiasts, who are for carrying Gospel-Liberty above all moral Regards, and slight the Motives of Virtue as insufficient to Salvation, are called Antinomians. The Word is derived from the Greek ἀντί, contra, and νόμος, Lex, Law.
