ANTHROPOCOMORPHITE, one who attributes to God, the Figure of a Man. See GOD, etc. Anthropomorphites were a Sect of ancient Heretics, who, out of a too great Simplicity, taking everything spoken of God in the Scriptures in a literal Sense, imagined He had real Hands, Feet, etc. The Passage they chiefly insisted on, was that in Genesis, where it is said that God made Man after His own Image. The Word comes from the Greek ἄνθρωπος, Man, and μορφή, Shape.
