ANNIS SEED, or Aniseed, a medicinal Seed or Grain; produced by an Umbelliferous Plant of the same Name, common in our Gardens. See SEED. It has a sweetish Taste, intermixed with something pungent and bitter: Is reputed an Aromatic, and prescribed not merely as a Carminative against Wind; but also as a Pectoral, Stomachic, and Digestive. See CARMINATIVE, etc. It also yields by Distillation, a white cordial Oil called Essence of Aniseed; of a very strong penetrating Smell, and efficacious in its medicinal Operation: It being also used by Confectioners to scent their Pomatums, etc. In distilling the Aniseed for the Oil; there is procured a limpid Water called Aniseed Water; which has much the same Virtues with the Oil.
