ALMANDIN, or Almandine, a Precious Stone, of the Ruby Kind; something lighter and softer than the Oriental Ruby: and as to Colour, partaking more of that of the Garnet than the Ruby. See RUBY, GARNET, &c. It is ranked among the richest of Stones; and takes its Name from Albana, a City of Caria, whence Pliny says it is brought. See PRECIOUS STONE.
