ALHIDADE, or Alhidada, the Index or Label of an Astronomical, or Geometrical Instrument, for taking of Heights or Distances—The Alhidade is a kind of Ruler, movable on the Centre of the Instrument; and carrying the Sights. See also Astrolabe, THEODOLITE, etc. The Word is Arabic, where it signifies the same thing. —In Greek and Latin, it is called διόπτρα, Dioptra, and Linea Fiduciae, Fiducial Line.
