ALCOVE, in Building, a part of a Chamber, separated by an Estrade, or Partition of Columns, and other corresponding Ornaments; in which is placed a Bed of State, and sometimes Seats, to entertain Company. The Word is derived from the Spanish Alcoba; and that from the Arabic Alkobh, a Cabinet or sleeping Place; or from Alkobat, a Tent.
