ADAGE, Adagium, a Proverb, or popular saying. See PROVERB, etc. Erasmus has made a large and valuable collection of Greek and Roman adages from their poets, orators, philosophers, etc. Adage, Proverb, and Paroemia are the same thing but differ from Gnomes, Sentences, and Apothegms. See GNOME, SENTENCE, APOTHEGM, etc. The word is compounded of ad and agor, according to Scaliger, Quod agatur ad aliud significandum, because made to signify some other thing.
