AVELLANE, or Cross Avellane, in Heraldry, a Form of Cross which resembles four Filberds in their Husks or Cases, joined together at the great End. See CROSS. Hence its Name; a Filberd in Latin being Nux Avellana.—Syl. Morgan says, it is this Cross which Ensigns the Mound of Authority, or the Sovereign’s Globe.
