ASYMMETRY, Asymmetria, a want of Symmetry or Proportion. See SYMMETRY.
In Mathematics, the Term is particularly used for what we more usually call Incommensurability; which is when between two Quantities there is no common Measure: As, between the Side, and Diagonal of a Square.—In Numbers, surd Roots, as √2 etc. are incommensurable to rational Numbers. See INCOMMENSURABLE, SQUARE, SURD, etc.
The Word is derived from the privative Particle α, and συμμετρία, symmetry; g.d. without Measure.
